  1. Before 1920 farm sizes were much smaller than they are today. Most farms were owned and farmed by a single family.  The farm machinery was horse drawn for the most part.  There was very few chemicals used for insects or weeds.  Weeds were hand hoed or controlled with a horse drawn cultivator.  Insects were hand picked or not control at all.  There were some chemical fertilizers available but most relied on applying manure and growing green manure crops, turning under crop residue, etc. for the majority of soil fertility. Farmers got their seed from local feed and seed stores or saved their seed from last years crops.  There were usually a grain elevator in the area for farms to market their grain.  The grain elevators shipped their grain by railroad or by river.  In America most farmers had a high school education by 1920,   not all of them of course, and some had a college education. I hoped this helped give you a small insight of farming circa 1920.  My experience is with the USA but I imagine things were pretty much the same in Canada.

  2. They stole fuel from each other and from the Americans to run their farming equipment using siphoning hoses which is how they became known as "Hosers"

  3. why don't you just do a google search for "canadian farming 1920" or maybe visit a library and do some research.  You'll probably get better answers.  I doubt you'll get too many reliable answers for Y/A this one.  Good luck with your research.
