  1. My guess? Choosing not to get married so as to preserve her hold on power and be able to focus on guiding England.

  2. To never find love and marry, for the sake of her country.  She was married to England.

  3. I think the hardest decisions had to do with signing orders for execution. She postponed signing Mary, Queen of Scots, orders a few times, even though they were drawn up. Unfortunately, Mary was the figurehead for several plots to place her on the throne, replacing Elizabeth. Yet another one she hesitated to sign was Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk. He attempted to free Mary from imprisonment and then plotted to make her queen of England. Supposedly, Elizabeth became ill when it came time to sign his death warrant. Another one that must have been difficulty was Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. He was one of her great favorites. Unfortunately, his charm did not outweigh his rashness. He went to fight in Ireland, was very unsuccessful, kept friends who had defied the Queen, and generally did not walk carefully around Elizabeth. Finally he plotted to take over Whitehall and force Elizabeth to summon a new Parliament. He was tried for treason and beheaded.

  4. I remember seeing the movie and it was her man... in order to be queen, she had to give him up, because he hung around the wrong people (who were her "frenemies" and were going to kill her in order to replace her). Yet, she became one of the best known queens and I believe was queen for almost three or four decades, not sure on exact number.

  5. I agree with Spam--Elizabeth was most visibly distraught over signing the warrant for Mary Queen of Scots' execution.   Seeing the mess her cousin made of matters in Scotland because of her romances, Elizabeth's decision not to marry was a calculated political ploy to preserve her own power.  After all, Elizabeth probably had only a limited number of Protestant foreign princes to chose from should she decide to marry.  While the Court of France schooled Mary Queen of Scots to be a Queen Consort, Elizabeth I both by experience and through her tutors educated herself to be a reigning queen.

  6. Never get married and have children.♠

  7. Elizabeth the 1st made many really difficult decisions during her regin as Queen of England. I've been studying her reign all year, and think the hardest decision was probably the religious reformation. England was extremely unsteady when she took over the reign, and therefore she needed to do everything in her power to stabilise the country. However, her sister, Mary Tudor, who had been in power brefore her had chnaged the Church of England to Catholisism.

Brief history: (note: this is all hand written from my knowledge so you may want to check on dates) :)

Henry V111==>Changed church from Catholisism to Protestism in order to remarry

Edward (his son)===> Continued the transformation  to protestism by making it more visable within the church. The first prayer book to be written in English was introduced

Mary Tudor====> Changed England back to a Cathlioc country. Tried to get rid of Protestism and was quite radical.

Elizabeth 1====> Changed Ebgland back to Protestism.

This move was dangerous as it threatened to annoy many Cathliocs. However, the duty to their monarch was held above the duty to their religion, and many prominant people chnaged back to Protestism in order to not annoy the new Queen.

Elizabeth did have to replace most of the Cathlioc bishops and replace them with people of the class they would not normally come from (usually upper class people now upper gentry (or upper middle class))

Elizabeth was excommunicated by the Pope, who called for Cathliocs to rise against her. Luckily for her,  most didnt as ahe was open to them believing Catholisism if they outwardly practiced and accepted Protestism. This was much more lenient than Mary before her. Elizabeth was trying not to be too radical, so she also didnt change the look of the Church too much.

Though Elizabeth didnt manage to please staunch Cathliocs (who did plot against her unsuccessfully many times) or staunch Protestants (who didnt believe she'd done enough), she did manage to please the masses.

Thus, helping to stabilise England at the beginning of her reign.

Hope this helps...in my opinion its the hardest thing she did.

Edit: Dont follow the movie too closely, a lot of it is Hollywood :D Though she shared a close relationship with Robert Dudley, there's no historical way of knowing if this relationship was "inappropriate" in any way. He was definatly a "favourite" of the Queen though, and a close companion. She also didn't marry him because his wife, who had breast cancer, died. It was ruled that she commited suicide by a team made up of experts including her own brother. Robert was cleared of all wrongdoing. However, romours persisted and it became impossible for Elizabeth to marry him without commiting political suicide. It would look like he had killed his wife to become King. His family, also, had many traitors in it and connected to it. It would have been risky making him King or even a king with no power (consort).

She toyed with the prospect of marriage, and a man even came to England to draw up the papers. However, it would have been hard for her to marry without insulting either France or Spain, who were both in competition. She didnt want to allign herself with a totally cathlioc crown, as she was Protestant. However, she didnt want to allign herself with a Protestant crown as she would then rule out completely having alliances with Cathlioc nations, who were already weary.

It must also be said that she was scared of pregnancy. A lot of women had died in childbirth those days, and she is said to have been worried about that.

  8. Never to give her valet deep throat without wearing a French letter first!

  9. I would say the execution of Mary, Queen of Scotland

  10. I'd say it was between these two things:

    1.  Not to marry

    2. Signing the death warrant of her cousin Mary Queen of Scots.
