  1. Depends on where you were in the social or class structure.  If you were a member of the Politburo, life was very good.  If you worked in a collective in Siberia, not so good.

  2. There were huge changes across the USSR over its 70 year span.  In 1917 Russia was a backward peasant country, agriculture was the main way people earned money.  By 1991 it was an urban, industrial country - and a World superpower.

There were also massive differences across the country.  In the Baltic republics they became part of the USSR in 1940, and they were scandinavian in mindset - lutheran and had modern industries - the USSR held them back to Russian economic levels.  In the steps of Central Asia the USSR brought permanent housing, electricity and employment.

For most city dwellers, life was much the same as in any city.  It was work, home, out at the weekend to bars, clubs or restaurants - falling in love, having children - usual stuff.

This website has many images of Russia - it has a load of cr@p, but the images of villages, of churches and apartments in the cities show what the country looks and looked like.

  3. Where and for whom?   Life was probably different for someone poor and living in a gulag and for someone with power in Lenningrad.  Ask a better question and you might get a better response... or do your own homework.

  4. Cold
