  6. To my knowledge, the modern olympic games have always given medals, meant to represent gold, silver and bronze, even if the gold is plated on and the bronze is mostly copper. However, in ancient Greece, it is likely that, instead of medals, victors got an olive-leaf crown, and a statue of himself (as only men competed) might be built in Olympia (where the Olympics were held). Also, victors would likely be treated much like many of our olympic victors: instant celebrity status.
