What was is that Paul Revere said on his Midnight ride?

We have an argument here and I would like to have people's input in this.

One of the points of discussion is Paul Revere and what he said on his famous Midnight Ride.

You have the choice between either "The British are coming" or "The Redcoats are coming". When answering it would be highly appreciated if you could name the source?

To keep it unpartial I won't put here who said what in this household :)

He said "The Regulars are coming"

I distinctly heard him shout it..,"To arms! To arms! The British are coming!"

Funny, though, how things change in the retelling.  Somebody even passed it along as, "Up! The Rebels!"

He did not say British because at the time everyone regarded themselves as British. He said "The Regulars are coming".

I believe the popular misconception was the British are coming. But that was false he did say the regulars are coming to sort of talk in code and not upset loyalists that might make him have a bad day. He also didn't complete his ride as he was captured but Dr. Prescott was the one that finished the ride.
