  1. He was a heavyweight champion who refused induction into the U.S. military.  His reasoning  being that as a muslim it was against his religion to fight in a war.  There were other reasons but that was the main one.  He went through the legal system which took over 3 years of his boxing career.  Ali was found not guilty by the U.S. Supreme Court.

I think being a black man in America who won a gold medal for his country and was refused service in his home town of Louisville, KY, when he brought his medal home, may have a little bit to do with some of his behavior.

He used his place in time to be a voice for his race but he inspired a great many more people.

  2. His ability to sell himself and his sport not only to the American public but to the whole world.  Everyone, even non-boxing fans, watched Ali whenever he fights.  Secondly, his being himself.  The guy dared to be different ("I'm free to be who I want to be") in his ways and in his views and principles, thus putting his career and even his life in jeopardy for some time.

  3. His cocky,  "i dont give a d**n" attitude. He always said what he felt and he talked a lot of c**p about white people, he was fearless.

  4. who cares that was 100 yrs ago
