to deliver the man of demon possession?

Why not just speak to them, why rebuke. What do you believe was behind the the " wind" in the air and the "sea" of the deep.

Ty for taking the time to look into this and post:)

In Christ

  1. Hi Sister Sandy

Hallelujah..good to see you again. It's interesting that our Lord rebuked the wind and the sea. One might wonder why He would speak to non-living, physical things. Actually, the Lord was rebuking the powers that were behind the unrest of the sea and the winds. The Lord was on the way to deliver a man out of demon possession and the demons surely weren't looking forward for that. They wanted to express their opposition to the Lord's move. We read even from Genesis that the seas are a place for the demons. The Spirit of God was over the waters after judging the demons by water. And satan and his angels are the powers of the air.

These dark powers, even though they come under the authority of our Lord, dared to oppose Him and disturb His journey. This caused the Lord to rebuke them with authority. Praise the Lord, our Lord who dwells in us has the authority over all evil powers. And being one with Him, we don't have to fear any dark powers either.

Amen sister..always love answering your questions :))

  2. In that story, Jesus was asleep in the boat and a storm came up and began to toss the boat about.  It was taking on water and the Disciples became afraid that they would sink and all would die.  They forgot that Jesus was with them, the Son of God.  Remember too, that a storm is quite noisy, lots of wind and thunder, crackling of lightening, crashing of waves.  The Bible states that He rebuked the wind and sea to be calm, but do you remember what Jesus said first??  "Oh yee of little Faith".

Jesus was more annoyed with the people than with the storm.  Jesus also said "With Faith the size of a musturd seed, you could tell the mountain to move to the sea and it would".  Jesus Christ is God in a Human body, therefore HE created everything and everything is HIS.  Everything here answers to HIS will and voice.

  3. I like the Satan behind it - he is the prince of this world....

Also, given the audience that the gospel writers were writing to - namely Greeks, Hellenized Jews, and also those that worshiped Greek and Roman gods - one can also see Jesus' mastery over two of the top three gods in the Greek/Roman pantheon:

Zeus/Jupiter was the god of the storm, with thunder, wind and lightening

Poseiden/Neptune was the god of the sea

(Hades, the god of the dead, is the other major god - Jesus shows his supremacy over him a bit later in the story...!)

Jesus comes through each of these spaces and shows His supremacy as the perfect human in perfect relationship with God the Father  by His authority and mastery over all things.

  4. the violent nature of them.

  5. I think He was rebuking them for causing trouble for the sailors.

    re·buke

    verb, -buked, -buk·ing, noun

–verb (used with object) 1. to express sharp, stern disapproval of; reprove; reprimand.

at the Sea of Galilee it is known (even today) that strong winds and waves can come up suddenly especially in the evenings.  These waves were threatening the sailors and Jesus expressed stern disapproval of them.

If you are asking if there was a demonic or satanic influence in the waves I don't think the text implies that or addresses it.

    Hope this helps.

  6. That area is prone to sudden storms, they come up quickly.

The Lord rebuked it to show his mastery over all things.

But for us we can take the higher meaning , which is that storms will come and we will be afraid, but if Jesus is with us then there,s no need to fear as he calms the storms of our Spirit.

  7. This is something which I have never thought about before, as I love the sea (it makes me sad to see in Revelation that in the world to come there will be no more sea) and God is very much represented in the word for wind (coinciding in Hebrew and Greek) meaning wind, life, spirit. But seeing your question reminds me of the terrible night when everyone on the island where we lived cowered under the raging of Hurricane Ivan (the biggest hurricane on record in that part of the Caribbean) and, as the eye of the storm hovered over us, heard a sound which defies description, a horrible demonic howling, full of destruction and ill will. It was like hearing something out of h**l, terrifying beyond words. We could only wait, hope and pray. I then realised that in such phenomena there is something essentially evil, although we are safe in God's hands where we trust in Him. The storm on Galilee was on a smaller scale, but in that small boat the disciples were as helpless as we felt in Ivan until the Lord sternly ordered the elements to be still.

  8. I hadn't really ever consciously thought about this.  I googled it and see that many have.

I would probably relate it to the Bible calling Satan the "prince of the power of the air," and suggest that God gets blamed too often, instead of praised.  It is the Lord who provides the peace, not the storm.

    Clearly, I'm speculating.

  9. I believe the devil was behind that storm. The scriptures say that he looked for an opportune time to tempt Jesus and while this wasn't so much a temptation as it was an opportune time to attack Jesus,(via the weather). Jesus was exhausted from ministry and satan knew it. (That's one thing about the devil, he attacks people when they are weak or vulnerable).

Peter also said that he "prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1Peter 5:8) Plus the account of Job shows that the devil does manipulate the weather occasionally.

Jesus was so established and rooted in the Father's love that the storm didn't "rock" His faith. He kept on sleeping, wrapped up in the Father's love. He wouldn't have even woken up if the disciples hadn't woken Him up. True faith is restful, not anxious!

Was the devil trying to stop Jesus from reaching the man tormented by demons? Yes. And he was trying to stop Him from reaching anyone else. He was trying to take His life. (Sometimes he tries to take our lives as well). But satan couldn't do it. Apparently he had forgotten the very Psalm that he had tried to tempt Jesus with earlier- Psalm 91. Jesus hadn't forgotten it. The disciples had forgotten it but Jesus quickly reminded them that it was true!

  10. He was a little superstitious, it seems, talking to air and water like they were alive.

  11. The prince of the power of the air of course, Satan.

  12. The wind and the sea both has power. The wind can come at you in all directions and that is like life. Many trials in life can come at you all at once and the only thing that can help is the one that has more power than the wind and that one thing is our Lord. The rolling sea can toss us in many directions in life and it is hard to fight against it but the power of our Lord can help us find the right wave to take us to shore. Jesus has to rebuke satan sometimes to leave us alone like he did the wind and the sea. Rebuking the wind and the sea He was also rebuking satan. Good question, sis God Bless
