  2. No idea, sorry,

just a guess, port philip colony? something along those lines, but really i have no idea.

  3. Andersons Creek not far from melbourne is the first place where gold was found in Victoria. That started the major influx of wealth creation in the place. Now they like to call it the world's most liveable city. It would have to be australia's best city no problem, but certainly nowhere near the world's most liveable. Get stuck on the Westgate bridge at 5pm on a Friday and revise that one. It may have also once been called Athens for obvious reasons. Up until Mr. Kennett tarted the place up with the Casino and Grand Prix etc. it was a dismal hole.

"On 10 June, 1838, it was reported to the Governor of New South Wales that the settlement, "Bearbrass", had a European population of 142 males and 35 females. On 9 September Governor Bourke reversed his view that the settlers were trespassers, authorized the settlement and appointed Captain William Lonsdale as the settlement's Police Magistrate. Lonsdale arrived on 1 October."

  7. City of Melbourne - Settlement – foundation and surveying.

Unlike other Australian capital cities, Melbourne did not originate under official auspices. It owes its birth to the enterprise and foresight of settlers from Tasmania, where the land available for pastoral purposes was becoming overstocked. These settlers formed the Port Phillip Association for the purpose of the pastoral exploration of Port Phillip.

    Settlement ‘Bearbrass’

On 25 May, 1836, Governor Bourke sent a Commissioner to report on affairs. In his report he stated that the settlement, which he called ‘Bearbrass’, comprised 13 buildings – three weatherboard, two slate and eight turf huts. “The whole of the European population,” he wrote, “consists of 142 males and 35 females. The number of sheep grazing is 26,900; horses, 57; and horned cattle, 100; while 11 vessels of from 55 to 300 tons are engaged in bringing stock over from Tasmania.”

    Surveying of the Settlement

On 4 March, 1837, Governor Bourke arrived and instructed the Assistant Surveyor-General, Robert Hoddle, who had accompanied him, to lay out the town. The first name suggested by the Colonial Secretary was Glenelg. However, Governor Bourke overruled this and named the settlement Melbourne as a compliment to the Prime Minister of Great Britain.
