Question:

What was popular in the 50's?

i have to write a story for an english project, that takes place on the opening day of disneyland (1955).

i need to know cloths, msuic, tv, food. all the kinds of stuff a middle class teen would have, watch, eat, or listen to.

  1. The 50s saw the start of Rock & Roll - Bill Haley with Rock Around the Clock - Elvis was starting out - Youngsters started feeling like teenagers instead of either children or young adults.

    TV was just getting under way, there had been colour films for several years by the 50s but most were still black & white.

    It was still the era of the mega film stars - Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant etc

    I don't know about in America but here in the UK most people didn't have a freezer, many didn't have a fridge, very few had washing machines and nobody had ever heard of a microwave. Soon all these time saving gadgets started coming on the market - but nobody seemed to have any more time on their hands than before.

    The street were a lot safer then. It was safe to leave a kid playing out in the street and there was still conscription. It was quite normal to see soldiers in the street or buses and everybody was a lot cleaner and smarter than they are now.

    However, there wasn't the medicines or operations there are now. Any bad illness you have now can probably be cured quite easily - in the 50s it would possibly have killed you.
