I t was the menace similar to Foreman and Tyson,he was a holy terror in his hay day in the ring and I'm  still not convinced his 2 fights with Clay and Ali were not fixed by the murderous Nation of Islam,many others to feel that way!

84 inch reach.   Liston was a decent boxer, he outboxed Machen winning the fight by decision.  His long reach did help him as his strong left jab was one of the best all time.

Fear factor - any one would be afraid fighting Liston.  He was a scary man with power and boxing skills.
