What was that horrible Bird??? noise last night.?

Question

In the night at around 3am I was woken up by a horrible loud screeching/squaking sound, I looked out the window, couldn't see anything but heard it was coming from the direction of the sky so I assume it was some sort of bird, I have been told it may have been an owl but i live in the middle of London so I doubt that. does anyone have any ideas as to what it may have been.

I was going to say Night Hawk, but they're not native to the UK.
