  1. Why do u need to know this???

I would have no idea even what type of music existed back then...

  2. If your question refers to the weekly "pop" chart, "Billboard's Hot 100," the song in the #1 position on October 26, 1974 was "THEN CAME YOU," by Dionne Warwicke and  Spinners (Atlantic - #3202; earlier Atlantic - #3029 - rare pressing).

The recording's debut on "Billboard's Hot 100" was on July 27, 1974.  It entered at #51 -- the highest debut position for a record in that week.  It reached the Top 10 (at #10) on September 7, 1974; and it reached #2 on October 19, 1974.  The following week, the week about which you ask, it moved to #1, replacing Billy Preston's "NOTHING FROM NOTHING"; but it dropped out of the Top 10 the following week.*  The record spent a total of 19 weeks on "Billboard's Hot 100."  The record also reached #2 on the R&B Chart.

*A bit more trivia: "THEN CAME YOU" is tied with the record that preceded it at the top of "Billboard's Hot 100," for the biggest fall from #1 in the history of the Hot 100. Both records spent only one week at #1, and then dropped to #15 the week afterward.
