  1. Limit British involvement on the South's side.  The UK could have provided the South with markets for cotton, war material, military intelligence, or military aid.  British North AMerica could have served as a hideout for Union deserters, or enemies.

At the same time, keep up good trade relations with the UK - the US's only signigficant trading partner.  The UK also provided technical expertise, as the world's most scientifically advanced country...As late as 1900, American engineers visited power plants in Hamilton, Ontario (near Toronto) to

    'see how it was done.'

  3. Prevent foreign recognition of the Confederate States of America.  If the CSA had received such recognition the door would be open to direct foreign involvement in the Civil War.  Compare this to the American Revolution.  If the United States had not gained recognition from France, Spain and Holland, the Americans would have lost the War for Independence because when the US did gain recognition, the British had to start fighting on multiple fronts against France in the West Indies, for example. So if the British had recognized the independence of the Confederacy the Union might have had to use troops to protect the border with Canada to prevent an invasion by British troops stationed there.

Also, it is worth mentioning that the French invasion of Mexico in 1862 that resulted in the creation there of a monarchy under Maximillian was a "back door" effort by the French to provide the Confederacy with support.  The French sent lots of supplies to the CSA by ship to Mexico and wagon northward into Texas.  This is one reason why President Lincoln supported the efforts of Mexico's legitimate leader, Benito Juarez, to oust the French, an effort that continued under President Andrew Johnson.
