  1. Over 2,000 citizens died in the Galveston hurricane and the island was completely destroyed by the storm surge.  The winds mixed bodies with the wreckage and cleanup took months.  Bodies were taken out to sea and continued to wash up on the beaches weeks after the storm.  The city was effectively destroyed and never again reached the population levels or importance that it held in the 1800's.
