  1. The correct answer is Southwest Airlines base out of Dallas, Texas.  The fine imposed by the FAA was 10.2 million dollars for not complying with structural inspections requirements because of an Airworthiness Directive (AD).  AD’s are required to be performed in accordance with Title 49 Part 39 of the U.S. Code.  Ten million was for over fling the AD when found by two days and $200,000 for not completing the AD to start with.

Bottom line they broke a Federal Law by not complying with the AD with in the time frame required.  American Airlines is in violation of not following the requirement in spacing of wiring clamps and shielding per an AD.

  2. It was Southwest Airlines. It wasn't wiring as was the case with American Airlines. Southwest's inspection problem was related to the outside of the aircraft's skin and checking for cracks.

  3. Is American the one you are talking about? They had to do all their safety inspections again according to the FAA and have cancelled over a hundred flights

  4. I think your thinking of Southwest fined 10.7 million for not inspecting there planes,

  5. It was Southwest.  A certain safety check of wiring was not performed in a timely manner according to the FAA but Southwest has said it was a misunderstanding and they understood that they had until a certain time frame to do the inspections on it's 737s, and that it was an oversight and it was not an attempt to operate planes that were unsafe.

    .

American operator of the MD80 has canceled thousands of flights this week to inspect wiring upgrades that were not performed up to standards and it is said that it will cost the airlines millions in lost revenue.  They say all they're planes will be operational by Sunday night.

    .

Sadly this week saw the shutting down or bankruptcy of three airlines in the United States. ATA (American Trans Air a small airline that did a lot of military business), Aloha in Hawaii, and Frontier based in Denver.
