What was the best school assembly you ever had?

I'm head of the cultural arts committee for our PTO this year. I'm supposed to research & bring assemblies to the school. Motivational, educational, just plain fun.

I just began researching & there are so many to choose from! Which assemblies do you remember best from your childhood? Which ones do your kids like best? (And, if you remember the name of the organization that presented it, that would be really helpful!)

  1. I coordinate some of the assemblies at my school, I love doing it!  However, in order to help answer this question, it would help me to know the grade level?  Are you talking elementary school, middle, junior high, or high school?

I teach in an elementary school, and some of the highlights are:

The jumprope demo group that comes in every 2 years - the kids LOVE watching the tricks and hearing the tips.  We do Jump-Rope-For-Heart every 2 years, and the demo group comes right before to boost the excitement.  From Kindergarten through 5th grade, they all love it!

Our start of the year assembly is always a blast too - a few years ago we created a video for playground safety and we show it right before the first all school recess.  It features the teachers using the playground equipment - properly and improperly!  The kids love it!

In the mid-west there is a group of "actors" that also incorporate writing into their acting.  They do a 2 part assembly, visiting the school twice.  The first time, they do a little skit and talk about writing and the writing process.  They leave a challenge for the school - to write your own stories.  Then, the week or so before their 2nd visit, the school sends the 5 "best" (picking them TBD by your school/PTO) and when the group comes back, they act out those 5 stories.  Great motivation for writing!

We also have a great science assembly where a scientist brings live animals - he does this per grade level request, though, as it doesn't work as well all school.

Many more ideas, let me know the grade level and I'll add on!

  2. 6th grade when we had a local Christan band come and play for us.

  3. The guy from "Made", I think his name was Jeff Yalden or sumthing like taht, came to our school and gave us a motivational speech. I can't remember what it was about,, but it was hilarious and really inspired most of us.

Another one we had was when this science guy came, and told us about science stuff lol. He had liquid nitrogen and that was fun too...haha our science teacher look like she wanted to stab him. Sorry I don't remember his name or the organization though.

  4. It was this really weird thing like bubble mania or something. It was so weird because this guy blew bubbles and made art of it for us and for his finale he put a kid in a human sized bubble for like 3 seconds.

  5. We had a motivational speaker who writes JumpStart come and speak to our middle school. It was really cool and lasted about 3 hours. He has a great sense of humor and has no problem talking about the fact that he is African-American.

  6. we had one done by the school e board and they dressed up like aliens and all the lights were out in the gym and everyone had a glow stick it was soo much fun i forgot what the assembly itself was about i think it was just a pep rally but not really sure but it was a lot of fun

  7. The one on my final day at school - ah--------freedom & independence !
