  1. Mainly money. Edmonton got 15million dollars, a couple players and 3 first round draft picks for Gretzky. They wanted him to sign an extension and he said no even though he still had four years left on his contract so basically dealt him for money.

  2. Gretzky had a personal service contract with Peter Pocklington who owned the Oilers and was having severe financial problems at the time. Trading Gretzky's contract enabled Pocklington to pocket the cash, well most of it. The personal service contract was picked up by Bruce McNall (sp?) who later suffered a similar fate to Peter Puck's, namely going broke and having their business dealings and methodology put under a microscope in a court setting. Oddly enough the first person to give Gretzky such a contract was Nelson Scalbania. If you're not sure what happened to him, see (fate of) Pocklington and McNall.
