  1. MAD mutually assured destruction . both sides knew they too would go up in a giant fireball , if they tried to nuke the other .

  2. no comprimise

    soviet union went broke.

just like we're gonna thanks to this war now a days

  3. Both the US and the USSR had the power to destroy the other and with it half the planet.

It was a lose-lose situation and in spite of a couple of crisises they all kept their heads cool enough to fight it out at the conference-table.

  4. The only compromise I know was about North and South Korea's boundaries.

  5. There was no compromise.  It ended because the Soviet Union and East Germany fell apart.

  6. not blowing each other up

  7. history class right

  8. The US was spending 4% of it's GNP on defense vs. Russia spending 40% of it's GNP on defense in order to keep up with the US. Subsiquently the Russian economy went bankrupt. The comprimise was for Russia to give up communist control in Europe as well as the Soviet Union if the US was willing to make concessions on defense spending. These consessions stoped the spending of monies on weapons and channeled them into more profitable areas of the Soviet private sector.

That's the breif explanation. Hope that helps.

Oh, GNP stands for Gross National Product, which in definition is the measure of national income and output are used in economics to estimate the value of goods and services produced in an economy. They use a system of national accounts or national accounting first developed during the 1940s. Some of the more common measures are Gross National Product (GNP), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Gross National Income (GNI), Net National Product (NNP), and Net National Income (NNI).

I forgot to mention, the straw that broke the camels back was when Regan increased our defense spending from 4% to 6% Russia new that at this point they would have to increase to 60%. That's pretty much when thay said O.K. we give up.
