  1. Very, very simply put:

    Russians sent troupes and tanks to South Ossetia, a region of Georgia sympathetic towards Russia and run by a separatist government. Georgia, a bit freaked out, sent the same. A clash ensured, both countries claiming that the other started it. Georgia stated that it was defending a part of it's sovereign nation, Russia claimed it was defending people who wanted to be part of Russia. Despite these kind terms, there was definitely a war in the area. Russia currently still has troupes there, in the name of "keeping peace," but many Georgians have claimed it as an occupation.

    It gets very tricky to accurately discern considering the two sides often have two stories for the same event. Georgia was a huge ally of the US, and had the second most troops in Afghanistan second only to the US. The fact that the US did not abruptly come to the aid of Georgia has put us on some shaky diplomatic ground.
