  1. The daylight!  i even own a ho replica of one.

  2. With regard to "streamlining" the vote would have to go to the L.N.E.R 4-6-2 Pacifics, but my own favourite locos were the GWR "Kings" and "Castles"

  3. They all ran pretty hot.  So, I would have to say that none of them would be the coolest.

  4. Southern Pacific's Coast Daylight's have been called the worlds most beautiful train

The Hiawatha of the Milwaukee road was cool looking too.

  5. Undoubtedly Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611.  A marvel of engineering and beauty.

  6. It's a shame you modified it with "Steam", mine's the PRR GG-1. I used to watch them from the front porch going from Harrisburg Pa to Baltimore Md.

  7. Ahhh, that would be like asking me to pick a favorite beer, or fish, they are all good and totally subjective.

I really like the stramliners, never saw one I didnt like but coming off the Milwaukee Road, I have to say theirs by a slim margin, the colors were very attractive.

Truly the Golden Age of American passneger rail travel.

There was a lot of pride in their public image back then, everything was clean and well maintained.

  8. The 20th Century Limited. It had a streamlined J-class 4-6-4 Hudson and was the most luxurious train the New York Central had at the time.

  9. 'Mallard', the A4 Pacific 'Streamliner' or 'Streak', set an all time speed record for steam locomotives of 126mph. on 3rd July, 1938.

  10. N&W J class was best in my opinion, but I would certainly put all of the ones mentioned on my top 10.

  11. Without a doubt, the A4 class of streamlined locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the them London and North Eastern Railway in the UK. One, Mallard holds the unlikely ever to be beaten speed record for steam locomotives. Several are still in existence and still running (altho' one of the class, Sir Nigel Gresley, did fail on a steam special this past weekend)

  12. One of the "coolest", and rarest, is the steam turbine engine of C&O fame, built as a last gasp against the rising tide of generic , boring (but supremely efficient) diesel hordes. It was streamlined, HUGE, and fast. But it had a hard time on sharp curves, and didn't last long in operation before dieselization overtook even the coal-rich C&O empire. Truly a rare and unique steam streamliner.
