What was the cost of food and gas in the 1920's?

  1. Well, it must've been really cheap because my dad said when he was a kid (50s/60s) it was like a quarter.  But the value of the dollar was also much higher.


  2. if you made 500 bucks a year, you were doing good. that's about 40 a week. you could eat for days on a dollar.

  9. According to the people history website a watermelon was 2 cents, a car was less than 500 dollars, and gas prices were around 12 to 15 cents a gallon. Bread was 9 to 12 cents a loaf depending on the year and location. Milk was 28 to 33 cents a half gallon depending on the year. Hope this helps out.
