  1. I'm not sure what you mean.  It was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas established 13 years before the Mayflower colonist came over.  The four Southern Colonies were Church of England colonies which was different from the Northern colonies which were Puritan, Quaker and Rhode Island was Baptist.

The religion of the original colonist does not prevail today.  The early English were Church of England, The Scots, Scotch Irish and French Huguenots were generally Presbyterian.  There were settlements from German states that had a faith similar to Baptist.

In the rural South it was very difficult for churches to furnish clergy for every little farming community.  Travel was difficult.  Therefore, people became a member of the only church or one of the only 2, in many cases, available.

At the time of the American Revolution, Methodism was still a movement within the Church of England.  When it broke out they had their horse back preachers who went from town to town ministering to people. Also, Baptist were very active setting up small churches. A Baptist minster was frequently a farmer during the week and a minister on Sunday.  All of this changed the religious map of the South.

  2. Jamestown was a British colony so the culture was similar to Britain.
