I know in Virginia there were few large plantations--most of the land was owned by middle-class landowners with a few slaves to work smaller fields (a relative was one of them, so I've a lot of genealogical research).  South Carolina on the other hand was mostly large plantations, and slaves under this system were more brutally treated--plantation life was the worst.    More indentured servants landed in Virginia as well, making that labor more attractive to some than slavery.

    Charleston was one of the major slave ports, after New Orleans.
