so in a nutshell they wanted there cut from their shows as DVD's and when used on the internet, and they wanted to expand the union?

  1. Think they just wanted more pay and to be respected. Which makes since because with out writers there would be no shows or movies.


  2. It wasn't just the Disney writers, all the writers in the Writers Guild went on strike.

    The main problem in their negotiations was residuals from DVD sales.  When their original contracted was developed, VHS/DVD were in their infancy, and no one could predict what a large part of the entertainment industry they would be.  Their residual payments no longer reflected how their material was being used.  

    Another sticking point was how product was being used on the internet.  Writers (and now actors) wanted clear policy on residuals for that medium.

    And a third problem was the Writers Guild wanting to include reality show and animation writers into the union.  Hollywood studios balked at that (as it would strengthen the union even more).
