  1. The earliest Norman castles were made of wood, which is why there aren't any around today. They were usually located on the top of a little hill, so the countryside all around was visible.

  5. They were made of of stone, usually on the peek of a small hill or mountain to make it difficult of en enemy to attack. They had everything inside: Courtyard, Servants, King (or royalty), Weapons, Solders, Prison, Animals and the list goes on.

  6. Very early "castles" were just an earth mound.

  7. They started as earth mounds progressed to timber forts and then to stone.

    Pre cristian irish also created communities on artificial islands called crannogs
