The earliest Norman castles were made of wood, which is why there aren't any around today. They were usually located on the top of a little hill, so the countryside all around was visible.

They were made of of stone, usually on the peek of a small hill or mountain to make it difficult of en enemy to attack. They had everything inside: Courtyard, Servants, King (or royalty), Weapons, Solders, Prison, Animals and the list goes on.
