  1. gmail was made exclusive-- you had to receive an invite. At the time the 1 gig of space was unheard of and everyone wanted to get invited to the Beta. People could only invite one person per day and so there was scarsity and rivalry in consumption.

    At one time people were SELLING INVITES ON EBAY.

    It was a terrific launch and by the time they opened it to everyone it was already established as a premium product. Having a @gmail just simply makes you cooler than someone  with an @hotmail or @yahoo. ( and they all snicker at the @aol kids)
