My dad wants the first Dracula film ever made on DVD. I know it has Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in it but there are loads of films called Dracula so its a bit confusing as to what was the first one. Does anyone know it and the year it came out?

  1. Nosferatu was the first adaptation ever of the book. A silent black and white film, very good... Check link below if you want to buy it online.

The one with Christopher Lee was called Count Dracula, released in 1970.

  2. The name of the film was 'Dracula' it was released in 1958.

Christopher Lee played Dracula (as he also did in about a dozen other movies)

Peter Cushing played Professor Van Helsing

www.imdb.com is a wonderful resource for movie information.

Also, if your dad is a fan of classic horror movies you should see if you can find a copy of 'Nosferatu', it was released in 1922, it's a silent film, but it still speaks to the advancement of technology back then, and it's still sufficiently creepy.

EDIT: those that keep posting "Nosferatu" as the first movie with "Dracula" as a character, that's wrong, the vampire's name was "Count Orlok", he was BASED on Dracula.

  3. 1923 Dracula's Death. Dracula is played by Paul Askonas. This was the first one.

Nosferatu was not the first Dracula film. It was based on the story but had no character by that name in the film. You can clearly see this by checking the credits list. Graf Orlok is the vampires name. Not Dracula.

  4. the oldest one

  5. The very first Dracula movie was Nosferatu starring Max Schreck from 1922.

The first one with Cushing and Lee is Dracula aka Horror of Dracula from 1958.

***Note to the next poster...Nosferatu was based on Bram Stoker's book Dracula...they only changed the names of the characters

It was so close to Stoker's original work that his widow sued the film makers for copyright infringement.  She won the suit and wanted all copies of the film to be destroyed but of course they weren't.

  6. The first was was called Dracula.

Do a search on imdb for more details of the year, etc.

The first Lee/Cushing ones were in the 1960s but Bela Lugosi appeared in one in the 30s I think it was.  There was also Nosferatu which was based on the same stories.

  7. filmed in  1898, one of the very first b/w horror films. Duration: 4 minutes. Studios: kinemacolor, Hove.   Title: "vampire partakes of blood"

  8.

Dracula is a 1958 British horror film, and the first of a series of Hammer Horror films inspired by the Bram Stoker novel Dracula. It was directed by Terence Fisher, and stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. In the United States, the film was retitled Horror of Dracula to avoid confusion,
