Here's something interesting.  America's third satellite Vanguard 1 is still in orbit.  The oldest man made object to stil be in orbit and because of it high orbit it will remain there for a long time .  There's talk of retrieving it so it can be displayed in the Smithsonian.

Vanguard.  It blew up on the launch pad.

Explorer 1 was the first successful US satellite.  It lasted far longer than Sputnik 1 (12 years).
