  1. Most of the golf courses selected to host the U.S. Open have been "tweeked" or modified since the first open. As the professionals began to dominate the tournament, modifications have been more severe to the point where the those at Bethpage in New York were almost a rebuilding of the entire course. Back in the '70s Oakmont was made more difficult. The first course with severe modifications was the Newport Country Club which hosted the Open in the early 1900s.
