What was the first double deck bridge built? I'd like to read more about the first double deck bridge.

I saw a special yesterday about the Brooklyn Bridge being the tallest structure in the nation when it was built. It was also the longest bridge at the time. Then "Number 2" or the Williamsburg bridge beat it by 4.5 feet. What really interested me was the George Washington Bridge (The GWB) which was then built and 2x as long! It was said that it was always intened to be a double deck bridge eventually, but the second deck was not added until 30yrs later.

This intrigued the question:

" When was this concept created and what was the first double deck bridge? "

Thanks

  1. This is a really neat question!! And it's really interesting to think about.

  2. Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne, completed in 1849, is an early example of a double decker bridge. The upper level carries a railway across the River Tyne; the lower level is used for road traffic.
