    There was an attempt to settle in what is now North Carolina in 1587, but no one knows for certain what happened to the Roanoke colonists, because when relief ships returned two years later, they had vanished, leaving only the word "Croatoan" carved on a tree.

  4. Jamestown in Virginia just squeaked by their first winters to become a successful colony.  According to many historians, what enabled Jamestown to survive was the arrival of Polish and other East Euros who actually knew how to build and repair structures, select, plant and harvest crops, and actually roll up their sleeves and work!  The first arrivals were so intenet in finding gold and jewels that they almost perished from lack of food and shelter!
