I am doing a speech on The Guiness book of world records and I was wondering if anyone knew what the first world record ever was.

  1. There wasn't any real "first" world record. The idea for the book came from the fact that Sir Hugh Beaver and his friends had a discussion over what was the fastest game bird (he shot at a plover and missed!).  Their debate was never really settled because there was no place to look it up.

He decided to publish a book of the largest, faster, smallest....so people could find that sort of information quickly. Someone recommended brothers Norris and Ross McWhirter who had been collecting those kinds of facts since childhood. They actually had a business supplying the facts to newspapers and authors.

With their help the first book was published in 1954, but the brothers had already collected the facts that were listed in it.
