  1. Good question

Even my French colleagues at work did not know:

Here is what Wikipedia has to say:

The city derives its name from that of its pre-Roman-era inhabitants, the Gallic Parisii tribe.

The city became known as Lutetia during the first to fifth century Roman occupation, but began to adopt its present-day name towards the end of this period.

  2. Paris was named for the Celtic tribe "Parisii" which had settled along the Seine.  Before that name was given to the city, it was known by the roman name "Lutetia."  The city became Civitas Parisiorum under Emperor Julian.

  3. The French language as we know it originated in the Paris area. Forced on the patchwork of French regions that had their own languages like the Occitan (south and south west France) and other regional dialects.

  4. Lutetia in latin, Lutèce in French.

Then the Parisii people gave their name to Paris.
