  2. Technically 1994 because of the strike...but if you don't count that it would be 1993.

  3. It's 1993. Toronto won the AL East and later the World Series. The Yankees came in second, but there was no wild card back then. '94 doesn't really count since the season was cut short by the strike.

Honestly, i dont think this has ever happened, the Red sox were dominant in the early 1900's and the yankees have been a playoff team ever since the 1920's with the acquisition of Babe Ruth, but the easiest answer would be before 1901 because thats when both teams were founded, there was a few teams founded in the last 1800's which is most of the national league.
