What was the last year when political conventions meant anything?

I've seen them all, on TV, since 1960. I think the last Democrat convention that meant anything was 1968 and the last Republican in 1972. Everything since then as been an info-mercial. They got REALLY bad after 1984.

With such a close race at hand, I was going to say this year, but the polls would now indicate otherwise. The conventions usually give their respective candidates a bounce in the polls, but McCain has overtaken Obama in the midst of the DNC.
