  1. Job diversification. If Tom hunts, and Jim farms, then I can make pots to store things. Then, Bill can go make jewelry, and Thor can make spears, and Bruce can sing.

  2. Different circumstances were conducive to the formations of different civilizations. The Mesopotamians had to find ways to survive the flooding of the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers, so they built canals, developed irrigation systems, and developed an agriculture. Since Mesopotamia was so fertile and there was so much of a surplus of food, some members of that society were able to engage in other activities besides just farming, and this helped pave the way to civilization. Similar developments occurred in China in the Yellow River basin and in Egypt around the Nile.

  3. continental drift.  In addition, it was also a climate change.  Keep in mind, when the native americans inhabited north america, they came across the bearing Strait and were able to sucessfully inhabit the land for many years because the ice age ended.

  4. Development of agriculture as opposed to hunting-gathering. Development of cities requires increased food sources that didn't permit individuals roaming across wide areas searching for food.

Agriculture allowed more people to live closer together. And larger populations required more regulation, administration.

Cities couldn't exist without the ability to grow food rather than "gather" it or hunt it.

  5. agriculture.
