Technology is nothing more or less than the study of the techniques for making tools and other useful devices. It started about 1 million years ago when our ancestors started banging rocks together to make a sharp edge. That's when anthropologists classified our ancestors as genus Homo (mean "man"). That is, it literally defines what it means to be human.

It was not "created" for a "purpose" - humankind's natural curiosity increased knowledge about the universe, and some people's natural curiosity and creativity discovered easier ways to do things that became popular.  "Technology" evolved from this process.
