    oh, yeah, and what we call Pease Porridge now (from the nursery rhyme)  Porridge was a forever boiling pot of scraps (see above) that you kept adding to day after day.  By the 9th day or so, the fermentation and rot in the pot would begin to make the family ill so they would start over with a new pot.

    ("Pease Porridge Hot, Pease Porridge Cold, Pease Porridge in the pot, nine days old...")

    Oh, and further - in Shakespeare's time, food was not eaten because of its popularity.  It was a means to survival.  The "food" the normal people ate then would repulse and sicken you and me.  "Popular" foods were only eaten by Royalty and the very rich.


  2. Depends on your class status. If you were rich or royalty, it was meats and roasted pork and fruits and cheeses and such. For the middle class they had meats too, but they had a mix of some of the poor peoples foods stuff too. Gruel/Oatmeal, breads, things like that.

    To answer your question, fruit. Fruit like oranges and such was hard to come by.
