What was the B&W movie with Ernest Borgnine as a railroad Conductor, and Lee Marvin as a Hobo? These two characters were at odds with each other, while on a freight train. Saw it once as a kid.

  1. Actually, it was "Emporer Of The North", and it was in color. In was released by 20th. Century Fox in 1973 and starred Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and Keith Carradine.

  2. Ohh dang, i remember it, didnt think it was in B & W though.

    Emperor of the North ??

    Googling now lol

  3. Either "Emperor of the North", or "Emperor of the North Pole."  It was released under both titles.

The best fight scene ever filmed and, even with Hollywood "artistic license", it was a closer depiction of the truth than most RR themed movies.

The story line was, no one could ride "Shack's" train (Conductor, Ernest Borgnine) and a 'bo named "A#1" (Lee Marvin) who vowed to ride that train.  The war was on.  Another newcomer to the rails in this depression era film depiction was an upstart named "Old Cigarette", played by one of the Carradine boys.  A#1 takes him under wing as a 'bo in training.

Though it was filmed not-quite-in-color, so to speak, more like the brown and white, to lend more authenticity to the movie, it was made way after color movies came around.  I think it was made in the mid-to-late '70's or so.
