  1. Almost a thousand of them did. 19 were killed.

    NFL World II veterans include Otto Graham and Chuck Bednarik, both all-time greats.  However, the most notable one is probably Bear coach George Halas who left shortly before the 1942 championship game with his team undefeated (and probably the best team of all time averaging a 27 points per game differential).  They lost the championship game without him.
