General George Patton, along with many other members of his family, was a staunch believer in reincarnation. He often claimed to behold visions of his ancestors. Anecdotal evidence indicates that he held himself to be the reincarnation of the Carthaginian general Hannibal, or a Roman legionary, or a Napoleonic marshal, etc.

George Patton he believed in reincarnation and that was only one of his past lives he believed he lived.....he was a character. He was probably the best fighting commander in Europe. His personal faults were legion. He slapped and verbally abused a solider who had a breakdown after extensive combat and was in hospital. In fairness he did not know how much combat the man had been in. But he also did not bother to find out before losing self control. His personal bravery was beyond question. As a young lieutenant in Pershing's expedition into Mexico he pursued and killed one of Villas best officers in personal combat. The problem with Patton was he had no real concept of the make up of more ordinary men. He had a long running personal feud with Field Marshall Montgomery and the two men had a personal rivalry to be the greatest commander in Europe. They detested each other. War was both Patton's career and his pleasure. It is interesting and revealing that he never thought of himself as anything but some type of a warrior in a past life.....Immediately after WWII he was an advocate of making an alliance with the former enemy, the Germans, and attacking the USSR. That led to his relief immediately before his death in a car accident. Patton may have been right in retrospect. The problem is it is hard to seperate how much of the idea was stratgic thinking and his love of war....Patton would have loved to drive his tanks into Moscow. Needless to say it did not go over well in 1945 though....
