  1. There were fewer people, less traffic, and more trees.  The air smelled clean and the water tasted good.  We walked nearly everywhere we went.  People hardly ever flew, they traveled on trains.  Smog was unknown except in the largest cities.  In general the winters were colder and there was more snow.  The sky was filled with millions of fireflies on summer evenings.  It seems that we had more rain in the summer and that we had fewer really bad storms.  We hadn't yet heard of pollution.  The roadside ditches were full of trash before the "Don't be a Litterbug" campaign worked and they were cleaned up.
