What was the original use for the Iditarod Trail? Who is Balto and what does he have to do with the Iditarod Trail? The father of the Iditarod is Joe Redington. What was his purpose for creating the Iditarod Sled Dog Race?

  1. a trail that was belived to be in passable that was used to save time

    back in the day befor planes trains it about a town and a team of sled dogs that got the meds  to them b4 they died

  2. In the winter of 1925 an epidemic of diphtheria broke out in Nome, AK. They ran out of serum to heal the sick people and many were going to die without help from the outside. The closest place with medicine was in Anchorage. There were no roads between Anchorage and Nome an there still aren't. So they rushed to medicine by train to Nenana and then it went by dogsled to Nome. This was the only means of transportation to get there. Balto was the lead dog on the team that transported the medicine to Nome that saved so many lives.

    The Iditarod race commemorates that fateful trip and follows the original trail used back in 1925.
