  1. The Democratic-Republicans were led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. They were opposed to the Federalists, who were led by John Adams and Alexander Hamilton. The Democratic-Republicans. They believed that the Constitution should be strictly interpreted and that the individual states and citizens should retain as many rights as possible. The Federalists believed that the Constitution should be loosely interpreted. They wanted a strong federal government. The Democratic-Republicans favored agriculture over manufacturing and commerce. Jefferson especially wanted the new nation to be a nation of plantation owners. He was against a national bank, which was founded by the Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury. The Federalists on the other hand favored the interests of commerce and industry over agriculture. The Democratic-Republicans wanted a strong relationship with France. The Federalists were interested in a strong relationship with Great Britain. John Adams, a Federalist, succeeded Washington in 1797. But after Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801 the Federalists lost control of the national government. As president Thomas Jefferson was responsible for the Louisiana Purchase in 1804 which doubled the size of the country. Soon after he launched the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
