  1. 8 MILLION at 1845.

    Now it's just 4 Million.

The Great Famine (1845-1850) killed 1 Million and 1 Million emigrated.

    Population continued to decline.

Population finally slightly rised at 1960's. Then declined to emigration and picked up in late 80's.

We are now a very rich country.

At 1850 Britian had 15 Million people and we were on our way, if not for the famine, to outnumbering them!

    It still effects us today.

The sole reason for the famine being so horrible was the British government of back then. They helped at start but new Prime minister came in and stopped giving us food. In fact, they were EXPORTING food from Ireland.

WE were a fourth world (yes, fourth) country.

There is 70 MILLION people of Irish descent worldwide - imagine how bid we would be if not for the famine.

Ah well, we bare no hatred towards the British. The famine though is just an example of how badly they treated Irish people during their overdue 800 years here!

  2. 2 mil

  3. 1841 total population of Island justover 8 million.

Now Republic is 4.2 and Northern Ireland about 1.7, total 5.9

  4. Prior to the potato famine and emigration n all that about 8 million. Bout the half of that now. Few years ago u used to see really old derelict dwelling houses throughout the countryside but the prosperity of recent years and population increase has meant these being demolished and built on.

Planning restrictions in rual Northern Ireland mean that a site only for building a house can now go well over £100,000 - something unheard of 10 years ago.

  5. Before the great famine there were over 7 million.

  6. 8 million just before the famine (1845)

  7. It is believed that the peak poplulation of Ireland was reached about 1845. Conventional figures bandied about are that the population was about 8million but it could have been 9, 10 or even 12million that year.

Apparently the censuses of 1841 and 1851 were the only figures available.  Lazy and incompentent emumerators could have missed 20% of the real population in 1841. In 1847 '48 and '49 the famine hit and 'millions' died. Nobody has even the slightest idea how many millions. Plus there was massive emigration by every available boat to any available destination for those who could raise the fare.

The Americans are only now releasing data which suggests a lot of numbers got lost. Also there was massive mortality on many 'coffin' ships.
