  1. Smelting iron with carbon (of which coke is a form) produces steel.


  2. Coke is made from the baking of coal in ovens at the tempature of about 1800 degrees. After a period of hours the remains in the oven is almost pure carbon, and burns hot and for a long time. Byproducts of baking coal is Oil, ammonia sulfate, amonnia gas, benzine, etc.
