What was the purpose of divining in the creation story?

I have to do a summary for this honors class, and this question was asked to me. The story i read was about how the earth was created from the point of view of a Yoruba (West African) tradition.

First of all, there is a thing called a dictionary, in which you can look up the word 'divining'.  Once you do that, you will learn it is fortune telling  like astrology, tarot cards etc. then you look to see where this is used in the story (if it's Yoruba they may use the throwing of shells on the floor and interpreting the pattern to tell the future). Then you see how the fortune telling was used in the creation story.  Was it used to decide something? Did somebody win something?  You'll have to figure it out.
