In brief, when Metacom became chief of the Wampanoag tribe (as King Philip), he believed the encroachments of the English settlers constituted a threat to the lands and traditions of the native peoples, and it had to be stopped. Basically, the uprising he led as King Philip’s War was a movement to wipe out the English presence in New England before it became too powerful. In that effort, it turned out he was too late.
