What was the relationship between Mary Queen of Scots and James I of England like?

I've tried searching, and the research seems rather vague. From what I can make out, James didn't really care about the fact that his mother was beheaded. In fact, he rather seemed like he supported it. And was he a protestant, or catholic?

  1. I'm not sure about their relationship - she certainly wasn't around much for the last 20 years of her life. He was definitely protestant.

  2. mary stuart was the mother of james,  if you were catholic hendry8  would cut your head of . if you wereprotestant

mary tudor would chop your head off  mary stuart was catholic

and her son james was protestant   thank god for emigrants or we would all be without heads in britain

  3. Duh - he didn't become "James I of England" till fourteen years afer she died! He was King James VI of Scotland while she was alive in captivity.

  4. James didn't have much of relationship with his mother.  She was forced to abdicate in his favor when he was about a year old and she never saw him again after that.  James was given over to Mary's illegitimate half-brother, the earl of Moray, to be raised, but was mainly raised by the earl and countess of Mar.

He was a Protestant (as was Moray, and a good part of Scotland's population), but he was never entirely trusted by Scottish Calvinists, probably because of his suspiciously close relationships with male favorites.  The jury is still out on whether James was actually homosexual or bisexual or not.  Heh, if James had been Catholic, I doubt he would have been chosen as Elizabeth's successor.

He most likely wasn't totally thrilled at his mother's execution, but as mentioned, they never had a close relationship.  Also, Mary's death freed up James's path to the English throne, which was a major goal of his later in his Scottish reign.

  5. James did not have much of a relationship with his mother or father. His father was murdered when James was less than a year old. Mary, Queen of Scots, abdicated when James was 13 months old. She had been implicated in the murder of her husband and made several bad decisions, which caused the nobility to force her to abdicate. She was imprisoned for almost all of James' life, first in Scotland, then in England under Elizabeth I. Her supporters raised armies and fought to put her back on the throne, which naturally James's supporters fought. James was baptized Catholic, but the regents who guided him during his youth, namely the Earl of Moray and James Douglas, Earl of Morton, were strongly Protestant. Protestants became more powerful in Scotland during James' reign, especially once Presbyterianism was introduced. With no parental affection or attention, you can't blame him for not caring too much about his mother.

James was a baby when his mother abdicated in favour of him, and he never saw her again.  He was baptised a Catholic, but brought up Protestant.  While imprisoned in England, Mary tried to send presents to him, but Elizabeth I wouldn't let them be sent to Scotland.

Mary's body was first interred in Peterborough Cathedral, but was exhumed in 1612 when James ordered her to be reburied in Westminster Abbey.
