  1. The Pilgrims settled the Plymouth colony on a site that had been an Indian village but the inhabitants had been wiped out by an epidemic. The fact the Pilgrims found a "ready made" place to live was, they thought, a good sign from God. The first winter turned out to be terrible as half the Pilgrims died from malnutrition. In the spring they were approached by an English speaking Indian named Squanto. Squanto had been from the same village the Pilgrims had found. He helped them and helped their relations with the Indian communities in the area.

  2. Not so hot.   Generally the native americans were sort of tolerant.  They did some trading and what not with the new odd looking people with bad habits and who also seemed pretty ignorant because they wasted opportunities, didn't hunt well or ate food that was readily available.

The pilgrims were pretty fearful and confused by the native americans.  They viewed the native people in terms of barbarians. Many pilgrims felt they were taken advantage in terms of simple trade.  Pilgrims did not make a whole lot of effort to learn anything that would help them co-habitat together.

Native Americans were not interested in adopting the rude fair skinned people's religion as they viewed the Pilgrims as violent and stingey people.   However, they did take pity of them now and then and kept the Pilgrims from starving.

Try to pretend suddenly living in a place where nothing is familiar.  Everyone dresses strangely and talks a different language and eats weird food.  What do you do?  You've been sent here on a mission from God, and a company that wants you to send back goods to sell.  Survival is obviously important, but so is sending back raw materials to the home country, and saving souls.

Pretend that some odd group of people moved in down the street.  They're loud, obnoxious and never seem to figure out how to keep food in their homes.  You pity them, but at the same time you loathe them.

    Hope this helps.
